Financial Aspects of Diabetes

The cost of diabetes is tremendous not only in terms of human suffering but also in financial costs.

In the United States alone, diabetes costs are over $130 billion per year and rising. This includes $92 billion in direct treatment costs and an additional $40 billion in indirect costs such as disability and premature mortality.

The fact that there is over $90 billion in direct treatment costs means that diabetes treatment is big business. The only good aspect of this is that it generates a great deal of investment in finding new treatments and looking for a cure.

The cost of diabetes to taxpayers is large since a great deal of diabetes treatment is paid for by Medicare and Medicade as well as a variety of other Federal, state and local programs.

In this section of the site we have information about:

  • ways to make diabetes treatment affordable
  • why diabetes care is so expensive and complicated
  • the business of diabetes treatment
  • diabetes charities and non-profits

This means the Glaxosmithkline drug will probably generate far less sales than predicted. The drug accounted for over $3 billion in revenue in 2006.
