American Indians and Alaska Natives who receive care from the Indian Health Service (IHS):

99,500; 12.8 percent of American Indians and Alaska Natives aged 20 years or older who received care from the Indian Health Service (IHS) in 2003 had diagnosed diabetes. Applying the rate of undiagnosed diabetes in the total U.S. population to the American Indians and Alaska Natives who receive care from IHS gives an estimate of 118,000 (15.1 percent) American Indians and Alaska Natives aged 20 years or older with diabetes (both diagnosed and undiagnosed diabetes).

After adjusting for population age differences, the total prevalence of diabetes in this group is lowest among Alaska Natives (8.1 percent) and highest among American Indians in the southern United States (26.7 percent) and in southern Arizona (27.6 percent). Taking into account population age differences, American Indians and Alaska Natives are 2.2 times as likely to have diabetes as non-Hispanic whites.

Avandia to Stay on Market with Black Box Warning
The Financial Aspects of Diabetes - The Business of Diabetes
Thursday, 02 August 2007

The type 2 diabetes drug Avandia (rosiglitazone) will remain on the market. However, it will probably carry the FDA's strongest "black box" warning label.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration committee of advisers voted 22-1 to leave the drug on the market but also voted 20-3 that the evidence shows the drug causes increased risks of heart attacks.

This means the Glaxosmithkline drug will probably generate far less sales than predicted. The drug accounted for over $3 billion in revenue in 2006.

Social Ties and Obesity
Diabetes Management - Diabetes Diet
Thursday, 26 July 2007

Your social network has a big effect on your weight, according to a study just published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The study was performed on data collected over a 30 year period on over 12,000 people.

Some key findings of the study:

  • Obesity spreads in a social network in a similar way to a contagious disease
  • Your close friends effect your weight more than your family
  • Geographic distance is less important than social distance
  • Friends and family of the same sex effect your weight more than opposite sex friends and family
  • Spouses living together effected each other's weight less than close friends of the same sex living far away
  • Since close friends effect weight more than close family, this study contradicts the idea that obesity is mainly hereditary
  • Not only friends, but friends of friends have a significant effect on your weight

The bad news is that if you have obese friends you are likely to gain weight yourself.

The good news is that you and your friends can help each other lose weight.
